Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I don’t know too much about fixing cars…so here goes. My Z couldn’t pass smog, was
running rich at low miles. Took it in the 1st time, they changed the plugs. Thought that
would do it. Nope. Didn’t pass smog. Took it in again (different place, but honest people-
they do good work). This was only 2 months later. Told me plugs are black, they could
clean them but it would be cost effective just to change them out. $1544 later, they pass
the car. (The shop had their own TEST SMOG).
This is what they did:
Found abnormal reading to mass air flow sensor, some wires were reading resistance
w/harness. Completely un-connected from ECM to Mass. Removed all wiring cover,
electrical tape, found wires melted together, mid-harness by hot exhaust. Repaired wiring
and confirmed infinity (open circuit) with harness, dis-connected from PCM to Mass.

When wires melted together, damage to original Mass Air Flow sensor. This was replaced
as well as the air injection control valve. Ok, so we’re all good? Nope.

Although he told me it was running well. It ran like crap even on the frwy. It kept on
sputtering, thought I was gonna have to pull over…It does this intermittently…at all
speeds, even while idling. I think it’s some vacuum leak. My hoses are all in pretty bad
shape…anyone got any ideas…have the same problem?
