how to set the timing

Pull out distributor leaving only the rotor button on it, rotate crank shaft until timing mark on crank pully/harmonic balancer are lined up with mark on engine block. This should be at (TDC) top dead center. Another way to tell if it's coming around to top dead center is to pull out #1 spark plug and place thumb over hole. You want the compression stroke so while someone turns it while your thumb is there you will feel it start to push your thumb away, if it sucks on it then your on the exhaust stroke. You want compression. Once you have it at TDC. Replace distributor with metal pick up on rotor button facing toward the #1 pick up on your distributor cap. Put everything together and your done. Please get a second opinion from a shop/dealer because sometimes it has to be done by computer. Good luck

second opinion get a timing light. If timing is off caches is the belt is old needs to be changed I don't recommend you pull distributor off.
how about you just change your crank pulley without even thinking about that mark?
