Could be a lot of different seals or gaskets leaking. Have this checked out by a mechanic.
If the fluid is leaking, the that means that you have a leak somewhere, and that you need to do two things. First thing is to keep the fluid up by checking it frequently, and adding the correct fluid type. Just be careful not too over fill, because too much fluid can be just as harmful as too little in many cases. And make sure that it is the correct type of fluid that your using. Putting Dexron III or Mercon V into a tranny that's calling for ATF+3 will destroy it. The tranny dipstick will tell you the fluid type. Second thing is to find the leak. Find out if it is a bad seal, or a gasket, loose line fitting, leaking or weeping hose, corroded lines, or even a loose or broken clamp, or if it is a cracked or damaged casing, cover, housing, resevoir or pan. Once you've found your leak source, then you should fix it, or seek specific advice on how to fix that exact problem.
transmission problems are very hard to cope with...find the leak and see if it really needs immediate attention, personally i would just keep adding ATF as long as the issue does not pose a serious problem, until I had the time and money to properly address it.
