Will only start with putting gas in carburetor

I'd use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I looked at info for 2.9L engine--35--45 psi. Also, check fuel injector pulse, check fuel injector wiring circuits. Voltage to fuel injectors should go hot with engine cranking, red wire, all injectors get voltage from the same source. Use a testlite and check for voltage, you may have to check actual voltage reading. The other wire at fuel injector is ground, controlled by computer. Engine cranking all vehicle systems get battery voltage. Engine running, the systems get generator voltage, that can be several volt difference. It can make a difference.

lightly tap the carburetor, possible fuel float stuck if been setting for a while. if daily driver, possible contaminates have clogged jets.
