'94 dodge dakota transmission type

My '94 dakota 4x4, 5.2 ltr. magnum has a transmission leak but I need to know
the type of transmission before I can think about problem analysis and repairs.

Thank you for the transmission number 44RE in my '94 Dakota. Yes, I forgot to state that it was an automatic. My next question is how do I diagnose a minor leak? The pan gasket has been replaced. My current mechanic informed me that the transmission would need to be "dropped" before he would be able to diagnose the leak. Is there another opinion or option re diagnosing the leak? Thank you.
