put in new battery ignition can't turn on my 95bmw e38

My old battery just went out last week, I heard a
sound then flashing lights and car lights came on
and went out, so I waited about 3 days and put in a
new battery for my bmw95 e38 it won't start from
the ignition but under the car it cranks over, ..
Idk
