Dodge Dakota shuts off after 3000 rpms

My son just changed his transfer case after he
changed it... now it wont shift out of 3rd gear,
check engine light comes on when you get 3000
rpms then the truck will shut off... what could it be?

If you have a check engine light on, scan for codes and see what it's trying to tell you. Installing the transfer case may have simply disturbed a tranny sensor wire or something related.
