2003 Ford Escape shift interlock chatter while driving

Asked by Donaldnelson164 Apr 04, 2018 at 07:32 PM about the 2003 Ford Escape XLT AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

A new one for me...
When you press on the brake peddle to shift from park
into gear, you hear the shift interlock clunk, then you can
shift into gear. What’s happening lately is that the interlock
chatters and clunks while driving, while pressing the brake
peddle to stop or just cruising down the highway.
I’m talking non stop chattering on some days.
I do have a video to show if need be. I’ve replaced the
shift assembly (includes the new shift interlock) and the
brake/interlock switch. Alternator is pumping out 14.23
and good ground on both steering column and body.
Any other areas or suggestions?

The truck shifts with no problems, it’s just the shift
interlock just keeps engaging and disengaging.
