Rotors & Pads need to be replaced with new?

Asked by GuruYDQV Mar 28, 2017 at 01:01 PM about the 2013 Mazda MAZDA3 i Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a 2013 Mazda 3 with 50K miles.  It is used daily and never just sits.  I have not needed pads or rotors yet so they are original and I do not notice any problems while driving at this point.  I am from CT so we do have treated winter roads.

I'm being told that my rotors are "rusty" due to the road treatments and that at my next service I should have my Rotors & Pads replaced.  (they said they cannot resurface due to the damage from the rust and road treatment).  I'm getting a price tag of $450.00 plus tax.

Is this real or am I being fed a line of bull.

First, get a second opinion, always! If needed, shop around for best estimate on time billed. Go to a local parts store for the parts, you will save some off of dealership prices. If you don't, or can't, do the work yourself, just pay for labor.

50K miles is about average for service life on pads, in fact it's better than average. It's also common to replace rotors rather than resurface them when they wear, and they can warp over time as well from heat. So at 50K miles, I don't doubt you need pads and rotors. But 450 sounds high, take it to a brake shop and get another quote, but sticking to original Mazda parts will cost you more.

For pads and rotors you can expect to pay at a shop anywhere from $320 to $460 to change them out. I'm seeing for cheap rotors and pads are like $115 and for a better set runs around $200. So your cost is in the parts, labor is around $120.
