It won't work because the battery in the fob is not good. When you unlocked the car with the key, the alarm was still on. Now, the proper way to do this is to get a new battery for the fob. This will allow you to shut off the alarm unless it needs to be reset or reprogrammed. You may want to talk with a really good Mercedes Tech. They know more about Crossfires that Chrysler does. I got a new battery in the fob and that didn't help. Chrysler thought initially the fob would need reprogramming. I assume they tried this but I will quiz them next week on this idea. It is a good suggestion that I call a Mercedes dealer to see if they have any suggestions. Thanks for your reply, mightminin11.

Sounds like you have a "sticky ignition". Chrysler told me they had to order an entire ignition assembly from Germany which would take several months, and the cost to repair would be $1600. I found a Crossfire forum online of other Crossfire owners who had the same problem, and found complete instructions on how to by-pass the locking system. I printed it out and took to my local mechanic who followed the procedure and fixed the problem for $250. Now my steering column doesn't lock, but the car starts! Good luck.
