This question is unfortunately very difficult to diagnose, without being at the car. My best suggestion is have your OBD codes scanned, you can have that done, free, at AutoZone or most major parts house . signgirl, I really do wish i could give you a better answer, here and now. But if you do this, you will get codes, and since it is an acceleration problem, it should be a code with "P" followed by four number, like P0123. That's just an example. Write down the code(s) and bring them back here. It could be a fuel filter also, which will not throw a code. Is your CEL (Check Engine Light) on? Any dash indicators at all? There are just so many many things it could be. best of luck.

this is an obd 1 system they will not check it for you but it is easy to check yourself and then find the codes on the internet problem is the codes are even more general then on board diagnostic 2 systems and may or may not help narrow it down. the obd 1 system is located under the hood against the drivers side shock tower. It is approx a 1 inch by 2.5 inch box. lift the top and pull the male plug out of it and insert it into first the 2 hole then #6 press and hold the button for 1 sec read the pattern of blinks 212 131 etc. Now google diagnostic trouble codes volvo 740.( hint not every code sets off check engine light.) now about that fuel filter mentioned above they last 30000 to 60000 so replace it but I doubt it will help . MY guess is it is the fuel pump this solved my problem of bogging between 1800+2300 rpm and a friends whose trouble was similar to yours. simply have your shop put a fuel pressure tester inline to see(most shops don't have the fitting if they are to dumb to rig it then never go back there) If the pressure is low then eliminate the radio interference relays located on the radiator overflow tank right shock tower and the fuel relay under the radio. These commonly go bad and can be found on the net for 8 to 40 dollars If they are are good then do the pump Pumps can be found between 80 to 240 dollars don't spend 240 at the dealer Installation is easy and instructions are on the net Most of it is done through a trap door under the carpet in the trunk with some work under the car. It will take you 3 hrs but if you are like me and aren't young small and thin enough to curl up and work inside the trunk or simply don't mess with things that go boom then have a pro do it. It will only take him 11/2 hrs Oh sorry, there is one possible quick fix the fuel pressure regulator could be bad. it is located on top of the engine just right of the valve cover. it is a21/2" long cylinder with a hose coming out of the front and the back. remove the front hose. If there is gas in it then replace it (40$ at dealer).90% chance some combo of the above will solve your problem.
