Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 1985 500 SEL was stored in a facility for 11 years. It runs but will
only start in neutral. Any advice on what the problem may be?

is it a automatic or a stick? If it is a stick you have to have the clutch pedal pushed all the way down
If it is automatic the safty neutral switch may be bad or out of adjustment

Can it be fixed at a transmission repair shop? Is it expensive?

the neutral safety switch should be examined~

Test it first...if you've got a multi-meter...or have a reliable friend do the job...it's like two screws....but all kinda scrunched up inside the dash~
Does not have to be a trans shop a local auto repair shop should be able to do it. But like judge_ roy says if it is under the dash it is cramped
Thanks roy I am no expert but the older stuff is what I used to work on. When things were alot simpler
