can a battery be over charged?

Asked by Glen678 Nov 21, 2014 at 11:24 AM about the 1989 Buick LeSabre Limited Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

i have a little 4" cube sized 6 - 12 volt battery charger and it takes 2 or 3 hours to charge a
dead battery. its cold here in WI. right now and i only drive once or twice a week. so i have
to start my car 2 or 3 times a day to keep it charged. if i forget to start my car the battery
dies on me. the battery is about 3 or 4 years old so i think i`m ok there. will it hurt my
battery if i leave my little charger on too long?

If you have to start your car 2-3 times a day the battery is junk. Once a battery goes dead and freezes it will never hold a charge the same. Especially if it freezes and swells the outer casing of the battery.
