1983 cadillac sedan deville v belt help

Asked by Dezi97 Jan 27, 2020 at 12:18 AM about the 1983 Cadillac DeVille Sedan FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought an '83 Cadillac sedan deville last month,
that had a broken belt within the v belt system. I
got a replacement belt and my now ex boyfriend
installed it, but he did a horrible job, it came off,
and I realized he hadn't installed it right to begin
with. I'm looking for some instructions or links to
instructions (video, diagram, written, etc) that I can
reference to try my own hand at fixing it (after I
make sure the belt is even still okay, as I'm pretty
sure it sustained some damage when it fell out of
place) I suspect I'm going to have to remove the
fan cover, as well as 2 support bars directly above
it, to do this repair, as I likely need to remove and
shift at least 1 belt other than the one that came
detached. I have slim to no knowledge about cars
and their parts/how to repair them, so beginner
type instructions (or additional links to sources I
can reference the basics and terms from) would
be much appreciated. A list of tools I'll need to use
for the various bolts and such would be very
helpful as well. Thank you!

Note: it says sedan FWD, but it's a rear wheel drive.
I can also get engine specs and pictures tomorrow
if that would help

Try looking around on YouTube and investigate possible instructions on a Cadillac Forum before trying to tackle this. Nothing wrong with going the DIY route but Hopefully this is not your sole source for information. Fan belts are not hard, just some knowledge is needed. Typically, you will need to loosen all the bolts holding the ac compressor, Power Steering pump, alternator, and maybe another device that the belt goes around. There is probably a diagram glued to the top of your radiator that shows how the belts should be routed. Once you get the front belt off, then put on your replacement followed by the re-installation of the first belt. The begin tightening what you have loosened checking for tightness as you go along. A good measure of "tight" is a half inch or less deflection in the belt when pushing down in the middle of it while a rest. Good luck with the repair.

In addition to this site, have you tried Cadillac owner forums and YouTube videos? Changing the belt is not too hard but you will need to get familiar with some hand tools and technique for completing the repair. for an '83, there are probably 3 belts and you only need to loosen or remove the ones that are on the same belt track or are closer to the fan from where you are standing. It is probably a good idea to replace the belt that came off. It may not have been the right size for your application. Getting a new one will assure you you have the right part to put on. To do the job, loosen all bolts that hold the belt driven accessories (alternator, power steering pump, AC compressor, etc.) but don't remove them. Then try to rotate these parts like a screw along the plane that the belts are running to take the tension off of the individual accessories. Once loose, remove the belts one at a time from front to back to expose the pulley tracks the belts run on. I suspect yours will be the second one of the three. Route the new belt per the diagram on the car (or found by internet search) and do the same for the other belts as well. It is very important to route the belts correctly so do the research first. Now begin to rotate the accessories back to their running positions and tighten the mounting screws as you go from back to front. A correctly tightened belt is important so after you think you have them tight, push own on the center of them with your finger. Each one should only deflect from straight by about 1/4". IF IT DEFLECTS MORE, RE-TIGHTEN IT UNTIL IT DOES. This is important so that the belts don't slip when going around their tracks. Good luck with the repair.
