Does anyone have an answer to installing a speedometer cable in a 65 mustang with a standard instrument cluster and a 94 T5 transmission
1 Answer
It's a mechanical system that uses wire in a sheath that spins inside the sheath housing Remove the screws that secure the instrument panel to the dashboard with a Phillips-head screwdriver. The screws are located around the edges of the instrument panel, including the bottom edge. Remove the screws that secure the climate control panel to the dashboard with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Two screws are located at the top of the panel and two on the bottom of the panel. Pull the climate control panel out of the dashboard. Pull the instrument panel out of the dashboard just enough to access the speedometer cable. Rotate the integral nut that secures the speedometer cable to the back of the speedometer with an open-end wrench until the cable detaches from the gauge. Raise the hood and gently pull the speedometer cable out of the interior of the car through the firewall. 7 Get underneath or jack it up to get to the end of the cable on the left (driver's side) of transmission. Do NOT go under jacked up car if supported by thee tire jack. Remove the single bolt that secures the speedometer cable to the transmission, then pull the cable out of the transmission. Lubricate the nylon gear on the transmission end of the replacement speedometer cable with either transmission fluid or engine assembly lubrication. Insert the transmission end of the speedometer cable into the transmission, then tighten the cable's single bolt to secure the cable in place. Guide the tip of the speedometer end of the cable through the firewall. Lubricate the head of the cable, located inside the nut on the speedometer side of the cable, with WD40.. Insert the speedometer end of the cable into the back of the speedometer, then tighten the nut on the tip of the cable onto the back of the speedometer. Position the instrument panel against the dashboard, then install and tighten each of panel's retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver to secure the panel in place. Position the climate control panel against the dashboard, then install and tighten each of panel's retaining screws.
