Question type: Shopping & Pricing

With 120,xxx miles on it, a new top, good interior and rust only around the fenders slightly, what would that value be on the average 85 VW Cabrio. Also, what should I check for?

The car is close to thirty years old. There are going to be various problems. Check in at the VW forums and find out the quirks from the owners.

In my neck of the woods (the salt belt) I would be looking for rusted major components like steering and suspension mounts, frame, gas tank, ffloor boards, etc. If you can test drive it have it pre arranged with someone with a hoist and look under neeth the car for such things. Could check the oil pressure and/or vacuum of the engine to give you a general condition of the engine. Sniff for burnt transmission oil. In general have a mechanic look things over for you.
