Air Conditioning

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have an 88 LSC. The ac is very effective when the car is first started, but once the
interior temperature is met, the ac will not maintain the preset temperature and the
passenger compartment gets very hot. Rarely will the ac start back up again to cool off
the car and on a long trip I get only a minimal out of cold air out from the ac. Any
thoughts?

Yes , it does have a temp control and if I lower it it usually does not make any difference, but at first the ac is very cold and comes right through the ac vents. Thank you for responding

Is the compressor actually cutting off when this happens or is it still working ? If compressor is turning off have freon level checked but if it is still working first thing I would try is spray out A/C condenser coil and radiator with a garden hose and nozzle because if the condenser coil or radiator is partially clogged with dirt and bugs it could be restricting air flow across the fins of condenser especially if condenser coil sets in front of the radiator.

Esqmarn, Our Electronic Climate Control Systems were ahead of the time when first installed and still out beat many of today's systems because they maintain a cabin temperature set point by modulating blower speed, source of energy (heating or cooling) and even source of air (recirculatory or ambient) instead of the constant volume systems of today. Without going into details, to see if your system is properly heating or cooling, use the override set points of 90 for heating or 60 for cooling. Once you establish that the systems are indeed working, it then will be a matter of hitting AUTO and finding the set point most comfortable to you between 65 and 85 and leave it there. The blower and the dampers and compressor of a fully functioning system will do the rest; modulating as needed. As of this writing, our youngest Electronic Climate Control is 23 System years old. Unless it's been fully serviced on a regular basis, we're lucky that it's working at all :)
