Engine swap
Asked by Tim Feb 03, 2017 at 04:54 AM about the 1988 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Sedan RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Hey guys
I have an 1988 Chevy caprice with a
standard 305 in it. I have a 2 part question.
1.) If I swap my engine to a 5.3/ 5.7/ or 6.0
do I have to swap my transmission also.
2.) what would be the best cost efficient
truck to swap engines from that would
drop right in or that would drop in with
minor work on my 88 caprice.

It will fit and tes you need the tranny, the most cost method is swapping with the same engine...
I want more power than the 305 thinking a 6.0
I think you would have grief dropping in a 6.0L engine.
I would swap in an engine/tranny combo, but be forewarned length of driveline will likely change so your current driveshaft will not work, and if you increase weight significantly you'll have to bump up brakes and springs. 305 and 350's share the same block, so no significant changes there, can even use same engine mounts.
I can tell you now, any LS swap into a box caprice will need aftermarket motor mounts. Also, driveshaft will need to be shortened approx. 2-3 & 3/4 inches depending on tranny you run. Also, headers clearance. Headers usually hit steering column, oil filter adapter, or starter plate. Power steering pump pulley may hit gear box on steering column as well. All issues are not too bad, jus takes a little patience. I just recently dropped a big block vortec from a 1999 Chevy Suburban into my 1990 Caprice, but since I have the first generation vortec which still carries the cast iron heads instead of the newer aluminum heads, my motor isnt considered an LS. So I was able to use the same motor mounts, same oil pan (with a little mallet work...smh), power steering pulley, modified flexplate bekuz of my custom stage 2 4L60e trans build, shortened driveshaft 3 and 3/4 inches, & thts it really. I had clesrance issues for headers, so I ended up settling for the stock exhaust manifolds with smog plugs & my car hauls ass. Dual exhaust with x-pipe cat delete magnaflow super 40 exhaust makes it sound aggressive and clean. Recommend tht set up to anyone.
@ Sam thanks for your feed back. Would love to know how much was your set up. And did you do it your self or a professional shop.

Muscle rods everything u need brotha. I have 87 2 doors 6.0 and yes shorten drive shaft. But that’s it. Good luck
will a engine and transmission from a 1983 Chevy caprice fit in a 1987 Chevy caprice
@Tim Did majority of the work myself with some help from a buddy of mine but no shops were involved in my swap.
How much you think all that cost?
