Better to "rebuild" 1984 vw vanagon engine or buy "used" engine?

Concur. Another option that folks are doing is to replace the engine with a different one. On Vanagon.com and other forums, folks have done everything from installing Rabbit and Golf engines, Audi V6 engines, and even Subaru engines. Theres a bit more to those conversions but a lot of information and pictures out there on the web. The true benefit of getting away from the wasserboxer is the elimination of the galvanic corrosion caused by the aluminum head mated to a magnesium alloy block. If the Vanagon is in great shape otherwise, I would really be looking at one of those conversions.
