1985 VW Vanagon needs to idle for 10-15 minutes to heat up the transmission fluid
before it goes into gear. Reverse works immediately, any forward gear needs to wait.

Any helpful ideas?

Did you check the atf fluid level yet? That's the first step. An automatic transmission service may help this too. Also, be aware that there is a separate differential oil that should be checked in the Vanagon too.

check the tranny filter. could be clogged. Mine clogged with band material. Not Good it will go in reverse but not forward. After cleaning screen I got another 100 miles out of it. Need a new one but they are hard to find
