My 2014 Grand Cherokee has done this twice now each time dealership says its the starter motor, the first starter motor replacement lasted 3 months, I think its a software issue where the car doesn't know its in park so will not start. also had a situation when I tried to put into drive and the selector would go back into park by itself, this happened 5 times
They replaced the power distribution centre and all is fine now.
@chilly2018: this was done as part of a recall after a guy was killed by the vehicle when he thought it was in park and it wasn't. If a door is open it will automatically go back into park.

Hi Derek That was very helpful and I will see what the dealer ship says. Yes I knew about the door being open and seat belt on requirement but it still happened. are you in the UK or the States?
Is this issue part of a recall? Does anyone know the recall number? This has happened to my 14 Grand Cherokee twice now. Luckily, the remote start worked. Please reply. Thanks!
Mine did that to me yesterday. I had driven around all day, got gas, made 1 more stop and went home. About an hour and a half later went to start and it sounded sluggish but started so I turned it off and then tried to start...wouldn't start and brake rock hard. Tried a few more times and nothing. Left it alone for about 2 hrs and started no problem but check engine light on so took it to auto advantage and they did a diagnostic on it code was U1504 and they did not know what it meant. When I looked it up it said loose gas cap. I took gas cap off and back on and sure enough check engine light reset. Hope this helps someone.
@jeepgc7441 did u figure out what it was
My 2014 Cherokee had the same problem. I removed and re-tightened the gas cap, then triend the remote start standing outside of the vehicle. It started right up! Thanks for the suggestions. --DP

I’m having this issue right now. I’ve had a sensor code (can’t remember what it is at the moment) for a fuel issue. They said it’s super common with the Jeep’s that don’t have gas caps but it doesn’t effect the driving. Now I’m having issue with it not starting so I’m wondering after reading this if the 2 are connected but I don’t have a gas cap to put on to try it out. Any suggestions? It did start sluggish for a few days but I thought it was from the freezing temps. Today it didn’t start after 20 minutes of being inside the grocery store. Dealership said they can’t do anything unless the issue can be reproduced. Please HELP!!
