Theft deterrent system
Asked by Dee Oct 24, 2015 at 05:47 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel Sedan FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 2014 Chevy Cruze wouldn't shift into park last night and the key won't
come out. This morning battery was dead, so now it's fully charged but the
car won't start, I get a messaged that says service theft deterrent system. Is
there any way I can get the theft system alert off , so I can start car to bring to
dealership.

Remove key from car, remove positive cable for about ten minutes, then place key in car and to the on position, then replace battery cable.
Can't remove key because car won't go into park
Ok there should be and over ride to the shifter lock, may look like one of these, you are going to have to get it to release and go in to park before you can reset the system as i said above
Hey did you every find out about the anti theft when you turn your car on? And did you get it fixed and how mush did it cost
No, anaerobic yet. Very recently new bathere was place in my 2013 Cruze. Maybe, that triggered this message in the dash, you think?
I am having the same problem with my 2011 cruz, replaced dead battery, all electronics now work, was able to remove key. But now car won't start?
What about if removing pos cable and still won't start but anti theft stop on?
I have the same issues with my 2014 Cruz. Radio stars shorting out, than the heater/air fan stops. Than the anti theft device kicks in. Not sure what is going on. I carry a socket wrench in the car so when it happens I can disconnect the battery and reset the computers. any ideas what is going on. This car is a lemon.
Worst car I’ve ever had. Just showed up on mine too. It came off after I restarted car. I’ve switched this engine 3 times!!!! New belt new thermostat twice! New thermostat housing! New temp gauge 2 water pumps!!

I’m having the same trouble right about now, The voltage on my battery is 14.7, radio turns on and all but for some odd reason when I try to turn it on the car sounds like if the battery is dead, I jumpstarted my car and the auto theft crap came on, been having trouble with this car almost since I got it, Chevy Cruze LTZ 2012
Please my own chevy is the 2012 manual transmission type. the Eco type. How can I remove the engine lock?
I had the same problem. When I used my spare key my 2013 Cruze LT started and the error message went out. When I went back to the other key, the car started by I still had the Theft Deterrent message back. Went back to the spare and the message stopped. Conclusion: possible bad key. Brining the key to the dealer for replacement and will let you know.
Thank you for your post! Had the sane issue and when i read your post i tried my other key and it started fine
I just had the same issue. Car was perfectly fine. Went out and the car wouldn't start. Had to get a jump to get home. Tried to start the car this morning and wouldn't start. Anti-theft sign was displayed, tried a different ignition key and it started up. What gives?
I have a factory key. My battery seemed dead. So I boosted it. Alarm went off. After one or two tries, I guess the alarm let me start it? The battery didn't need charging. But some sort of kill switch disabled my uplander until I tried boosting it?? Bizarre
I'm having the same issues. Anyone find a solution?
I found out that it’s a problem with the key being programmed to the computer and using my spare key fixed my problem. Try the spare key and see if it works for you too.

I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze LT 1.4L, I got this car it was two years old and didn’t even have 50,000 miles on it. Since I’ve gotten it, motor was rebuilt under warranty, new turbo, two new inter coolers, two thermostats and housings. Two new Serp. belts. Major oil leak coming from header bolts and multiple coolant leaks in almost every place you can think. Not to mention the misfiring and what seems like the car isn’t choking. My battery voltage has been up for two weeks now. Usually runs around 13.8volts and now it’s up to 14.2-15.1volts. A new tensioner was just put on as well but I’m really leaning that the ALT is bad, but this morning this theft deterrent system check came up and the car had a little hard time starting as well. I’m wondering if disconnecting the battery will do anything or if I won’t even be able to start it after. UPDATE: shut car off and turned back on with no issues but voltage still at 14.7-15.0volts
I’ve been having this issue for 2 years now. It hasn’t been consistent enough to be inconvenient but these past 6 months have been horrible. I’ve gone days without my car wanting to start. All that shows up is the theft deterrent system. It’ll happen randomly as well as I’ve definitely been stranded in a random parking lot or at work because of this. Took it to the dealer who apparently wanted to charge me about 200+ just to tell me what was wrong with it, I couldn’t pay that. I tried removing the positive cable from batter, putting key in and then cable back on but that doesn’t work for me. I’m basically stuck hoping my car turns on every morning so I don’t have to Uber everywhere, until I can afford to fix this. Any help would be highly appreciated

Yes I am another who has the lemon of a car called the Chevy Cruz. Mine is a 2012 and to be honest I have had the car parked more than I have been able to drive it literally! This car is a very disappointing vehicle to be produced by Chevrolet! My dad was a die hard ford guy and I was always his die hard Chevy girl but yeah this one is imbarrassing! I guess I should of listened to my dad and bought a ford instead! Same issues as everyone above! Anti-theft. Won’t start and dead battery! What a shame for what seemed to be such a sweet car turns out to be so darn sour’

Just had this problem today with my 2017 cruze with a new battery and 40,000 miles on it... Me replacing my keypad battery worked and it cranked right up...
I disconnected battery and turned off the electricity switch for 10 minutes and then jump started my car. It did it again a couple weeks after but when I switched to my spare key I never had the problem again until a day ago. I went to the dealership and got a new key and it seems to be working fine
the fobs fail often. i ripped mine apart and cleaned the contact points for the power from the battery on the little circuit board. Reassembled. Tested it. The issue has stopped. The fob might work but if it is low enough in power and the contact on the circuit board are dirty enough it won't disable the anti theft even if you put a new battery in it.
I am not certain what causes this, but I think it has to do with Bluetooth connection to your phone and the app that we use for remote start...my car seems to function better when I shut off Bluetooth.... I quit using the service for the app several months ago, but I think the app still contacts the car, I am going to sign out of app and delete it...I am very confident this will fix the problem..mi will let you know.
Same problems with my 2013 Cadillac ATS but with some extra symptoms like having to open and close the driver seat side window then after car will tell me to lower and close passenger side window
I have a 2010 Chevrolet Cruze automatic transmission ,when shift in drive it doesn't move .needs answer.
