Erratic speedometer

Asked by rescue406 Jan 12, 2011 at 10:38 AM about the 1990 Dodge Spirit 4 Dr LE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1990 dodge spirit, V-6 and automatic trans. I replaced the transaxle a
year ago. I have an erratic speedo issue now. It seems to happen sometimes above
65 mph. It jumps 1 to 40 mph above whatever I am traveling. What is interesting
it is worse the further the accelerator is pushed down, when you let off, it
stops. I notice it when it rains and when it is cold. When this jump happens
greaterthan 20 mph, the car cuts out momentarilly until it drops down, which is
usually less than a second. Is the throttle position sensor somehow relater or
linked to anything speed related on the trans? I did change speed sensor, but it
didn't fix the issue. Comments?

Sounds like something is causing the speedometer cable to bind if it has one. If not, then the sprocket that the Vehicle Speed Sensor takes readings off of is either damaged or misaligned.
