Transmission

Asked by munoza May 06, 2013 at 02:18 AM about the 1986 Ford F-150 XL Extended Cab LB

Question type: General

I have a 1986 F150 XL 302 with a 17 bolt, C6 3speed transmission.  Having tranny trouble so it a great time to up-grade to an overdrive transmission and rear if needed to meet the replacement of the transmission needs to gain better fuel millage.  Are there any aftermarket products out there that will fit my truck or rebuilt unit?

Thanks

nice looking truck. It will cost about one third the price to rebuild the C-6 tranny than to install an AOD tranny.. But if you must have the AOD you'll need to lower the gears in the rearend to 2:75 as you probably have a much higher gear with the C-6. Trucks were/are made for pulling, towing and hauling so they usually put high gears in them like a 3:50 or 4;10 ratio which is great for torque but bad for MPG. A good hway gear of :75 will raise yur MPG but aleast a few miles per galon. You can also add a K-N filter charger to your air intake for a few miles per gallon increase more, then. make sure your tires are properly inflated to their recommnded PSI with air or the new Nitrogen for even more fuel economy. Aftermarket Headers with a dual exhaust will also increase your mileage. A front airdam spoiler attacjhed below the front bumper will divert air around your truck instead of under it and will let your truck cut thru the air much better thus increasing aerodynamics and giving you extra fuel mileage. Don't know much else to do other than aways keep your truck tuned up and fresh oil every 3-4 K miles.. Good Luck, Kenny/MrBlueOval

Pardon my typo's. I should have proof read this first. I have a messed up keyboard and the keys stick sometimes. What I was trying to say above was that. "2:75 to one is a good Highway gear ratio and will raise your MPG by atleast a few miles per gallon" if you have a 3:50 or 4:10 like most Ford pickups have from the factory.
