It being an 87 there should be 2 big fuses under the hood that are for the alternator. Have u looked to see if those are fried? I had an 89 ranger xlt and I thought I screwed my alternator one day and was about to go get another one cuz I could get it to charge long enought I fire up run for 10 seconds and die. I looked at all the fuses an sure enough there was 2 of them fried.

You are so going to get a laugh out of this. The problem with my alternator not charging on my 87 Ford F150 Lariat 2 wheel drive, was when I changed out the solenoid the wire going to the alternator did not get put on the solenoid. LOL and I have already bought $108 alternator that's and electrical part, they won't take it back. All you can do is laugh or otherwise we would spend a lot of time crying. So to all you mechanical men out there when a overly distraught do it herself kind of woman says I replaced this this and this be the hero find what she forgot to put back on and fix it for her please. My lesson from this is always double-check the person that is helping you. And if something doesn't work after an install or something is different about the dash lights go back and look at that install you can never be too confident that you forget we are all open for era.
