There should be a label in and out. In or inlet should go to the tank side and out or output to engine.
Then just test it by connecting a hose on each end of the pump and submerging hoses in a container with fuel and see which side sucks the fuel, that side goes to the tank
I have a '91 F-250 and my external pump is by Bosch, frame mounted under the drivers side and the WIRED END is the OUTFLOW.
