Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1988 f150 just put ignition switch in and
has new battery I put a new solenoid in it starter
sounds like it's engaging fine when I jump the
solenoid I could have gotten a bad part but I am
going to take it back to the parts store and get the
more expensive solenoid see if that solves it but if
that doesn't do it does anybody know if my truck
has a neutral safety switch? It is a Manuel 5 speed
before this problem and since I bought the truck I
have been starting it in gear has never been a
problem before thanks in advance

There may be a safety switch on the clutch the clutch pedal needs to be pushed down to the floor when starting I have had problems with a solenoid not getting proper ground through the mounting bolts you can run a ground wire from the battery to one of the mounting bolts and see if that helps

To find out if it's the solenoid, try placing a jumoer wire from battery side of solenoid to the small termi al where ignition switch signal comes in, if it starts then there's nothing wrong with solenoid, it's somewhere on the ignition safety or ignition switch
