1989 f150 exl lariat

Asked by Nathan Sep 29, 2023 at 09:15 PM about the 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat Standard Cab LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm having fuel problems.  I can smell gas but
there's no leaks.  I've gone through four fuel filters
in about a month.  Is there a filter in the fuel
injector?  Dirty gas tank?
My truck also sounds like it's knocking when idling
but when driving it you can hear it.  I posted a video
on this.

There is a fuel strainer in the fuel tank, a main fuel filter in the frame rail, now each injector has a screen built in and it is not serviceable. If you smell fuel then you have a fuel leak, check the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel tank switching valve, the fuel vapor system.

Yes, check the vacuum hoses associated with the EVAP system. Most likely one is leaking fuel vapor and that's what you're smelling. Hope that helps! Jim
