1989 Ford F-150 5.0 5 Speed Manual Stalling

Asked by CATMAN137 Oct 06, 2018 at 09:37 PM about the 1989 Ford F-150 XLT Lariat Extended Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So, my 89 Ford F150 I picked up for $500 is giving me a problem. When I
first start up I here my High Pressure Pump on the frame wind up and the
truck shows about 15-20 PSI on rail. After starting she runs for a while until
she gets hot. I've monitored the high pressure fuel pump and voltage is
always present. Once she had been running  a bit my pressure quickly
drops to 10 PSI, truck sputters then stalls. When trying to restart after stall I
can hear my High Pressure pump wind up but my PSI on the rail stays flat at
zero PSI. I think it's bad but I want to confirm. I would think if my sending unit
was bad It wouldn't stay running at all. Any opinions?

Cat Did you ever discover the problem? What I noticed on my truck is that the high pressure pump is actually srarving for fuel, indicating to me that the in-tank pump had quit pumping. Even if I change tanks during this stalling event the HP pump still starves. Turn the truck off and let it set for 5 minutes and it starts right back up. Run fine for 20- 30 minutes then stalls again.
