what can be the issue when put in drive it will not move?

My 1989 F250 rpms went up and the truck started to slow down until it
stopped and I was still in drive and tried putting it into reverse it still would not
move it is an e40D trans what could be the issue?  Also when it sat for a
couple of days it would work but do not know long it would last afraid to move
it to far.

first thing to do is add some trans fluid to it...

Check the transmission fluid level. Look at the color of the transmission fluid, if it is a nice red color that is a good thing, if it is brownish burnt looking that is a bad thing. It is likely that the transmission needs to be rebuilt.
