1989 f250 w/460

Asked by Aaron J. Feb 01, 2015 at 02:45 PM about the 1989 Ford F-250 XLT Lariat Standard Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 1989 f250 with a 460. No
spark to the distributor. We replaced
the coil and still no spark. Checked all
connections and fuses. And nothing.
What else could it be?

1987 460 here. having lots of electrical issues / projects. had same problem, and replaced the ignition control module, and starter relay. subsequently replaced starter also bc it was pulling too much power and thus possibly diminishing the power supply to the coil for spark(?). this solved my problem though. those 3 parts cost about 100 bucks and went in pretty quickly. now on to rewiring the ignition system.

I had the same problem with a rebuilt starter I had in my 1988 W/460, batter was never strong enough to turn over. They do require a lot of power at the coil, just because it turns over it may still not have enough to fire up. Glad to see I am not the only one who has run into this
