water loss

thinking of purchase a 1983 ford ranger.  only seller says is that it starts and runs but will not hold water.  trying to determine possible causes.  he says he doesn't know why so don't ask...

Only way to know is to inspect the engine cooling system. Could be anything from a bad hose to a cracked engine block. I would not buy it unless you know where it is leaking. If it's just a hose, less than $50. Radiator could cost $200. Cracked engine block, thousands of dollars.
