Should I use 5W30 on an 87 Pontiac Grand Prix Brougham V6 engine?

Asked by PaulTG Jun 05, 2014 at 03:27 PM about the 1987 Pontiac Grand Prix Brougham

Question type: General

Car has just over 120,000 miles on it. I was thinking of synthetic high mileage oil. Is it a waste of money with no real difference?

I switched to 10w30 full synthetic on every car I've owned since as far back as I first read a report about it. It (I swear) has lasted longer between oil changes still looking like new. Lot of guys I asked said why go to 5 as it's only 5 until the engine warms up a tad.( viscosity increases with engine temp)

Agree. Go to synthetic and then double your oil change intervals. Changing the filter once between oil changes might be a good idea, but changing the oil sooner is just wasting money.
