starter or battery

Asked by ang_askew Dec 20, 2015 at 07:28 PM about the 2003 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Ford Taurus. It has trouble turning over to start. It does not
click. It goes like eeerrrerrrrrr turning over and it takes a little bit doing that
before it starts. All my lights and the radio work. The battery is probably at
the best over 1 year old. Could this be the starter. I have noticed the past
few days that it sounds like something is winding out under the hood. I did
not pay too much attention due to the car always makes a lot of noise with
being so old.

Hard saying, could be one or the other, check the battery first it has easier access, but by the sounds of it, probably the starter.

Basic test of your starter system; Battery, terminals clean, Alternator charging, are ALL battery cables making good connections all the way to the starter and engine ground, clean connections.. If all that is good, then pull starter and check it.
