my dodge dakota shifts way to late going from 3rd to 4th then into over drive

While getting on the freeway my tranny has a hard time going thru gears I have
the 5.9 liter 360. V8 and when it does get into the overdrive gear it runs good all
the gears work just fine when it shifts gears it's an automatic transmission I
have to really rev up the r.p.ms befor it will shift a specially going into over drive
and not shur what to do first to correct it please I need some input befor it gets
worse thanks
