Replacement key will not start car

I only had one key for my 2004 Subaru wrx
and unfortunately lost it. I had a new key
made by the locksmith but it will not start the
car. Turns in the ignition, unlocks steering
and can turn all the way, but nothing from
starter. The security light on the dashboard is
flashing twice. What do I do? I tried to get
help from Subaru and they told me that I
need to replace my ignition. Is this true? The
locksmith says that key should work if it is
turning all the way

Sounds like your key is the wrong one, most cars need the VIN number to make the correct key for your year ? did he ask for the VIN number to make the key? you said locksmith, but is he a AUTO LOCKSMITH. The key can be made but it has to be done by someone that knows what the hell they are doing !

Your owners manual shows you how to program the OEM fob-key to your Imp easily. The VIN is NOT needed, Cometguy, for any Subaru, but the latest iterations require that the vehicle's in-dash receiver be present for the dealer to program a new fob. Not necessary for older iterations.
