Burning oil?

Asked by Dinh Jan 04, 2017 at 08:20 AM about the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 350 Sport 4MATIC

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hello,

My car currently has 27k miles on, last serviced at 20k
miles. Last night I had the "check oil" light come on. I
checked the oil and it was at the minimum line on the
dipstick. I stopped it off at the dealer today and the service
advisor said this is "normal" to have to top off the oil after
about 7k miles??? This isn't the first time I've  dropped off
the car for the same issue. The last time it was at 14k
miles, same thing low light came on dropped off the car
and that time the advisor said it's NOT normal so they kept
the car for 3 days and ran tests to see if it was burning oil
so they concluded that since I didn't buy the car from them
they didn't know if it were topped off with the correct
amount of oil because it wasn't burning any oil. So my
question is it normal for an E350 to burn oil with only 27k
miles on it? Or is this advisor crazy? TIA!!!

So it used 1 quart in 7,000 miles? If so I think that is fine and no need to worry.

I read an article not that long ago on oil consumption on these newer cars. It said that because of the light weight oils recommended these days that is is not uncommon for an engine to use 1 quart of oil per 3000-5000 miles. I was a little took by this but it makes sense, lighter weight oils, higher compression motors. But one thing you may want to make sure is in good condition would be the pcv system if it has one and or the engine ventilation, filters and such. If the crankcase is not ventilated per plugged breather or bad pcv it will push oil up past the rings.

Low tension piston rings contribute to the oil usage also. I don't get concerned until an engine uses more than a quart in 2,000 miles.
