Why does AC automatically come on when heat, defrost or any other envirmental setting is selected?

The AC compressor kicks in to on these settings to keep the compressor lubricated internally, Otherwise it sits idle until summer time. This makes it have less chance of something going wrong with it. You still get your heat, right?
