You can often tell how sever and where by looking very careful at the car. Often if the car has been repainted you will find seems around places like the line over the roof. there will often be a different texture and feel to paint as well. in some cases you can find left over damage not repaired like i did in my jetta i bought a few years back. I found a poped seem on the fender support .
A top notch body shop could probably tell you a lot but you would have to pay them for an inspection.
