Antitheft solution

Asked by Evanb91 Jan 10, 2018 at 04:31 PM about the 2003 Ford Windstar LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar minivan that
won't start or even try to start when I turn
the key. However, the theft light on the
dashboard blink periodically. I've used the
remote in the past to fix this issue by
unlocking and locking the vehicle over and
over again a few times. I've also
disconnected the battery for a few minutes
and that has also worked in the past.
However, neither method is working this
time. My next step would be to check the
ECM fuse. Are there any other options I
could try before taking it to a shop or paying
to reprogram my key?

I had a very similar issue on a 2003 Chevy Venture. I was told to junk the car after leaving it in one shop with lots of computer equipment for 5 days, and after paying for the analysis. The antitheft would prevent the vehicle from turning on for about 60 minutes, but only after first driving the van once for about 20 minutes, so maybe it was related to a temperature change between the cool garage and the warm post-driving parking lot. After a month of reading books in parking lots for an hour, it suddenly died in traffic, and I left it with a new mechanic over the holidays, for 6 weeks. They changed the camshaft position sensor as well as the crankshaft sensor. They gave me a plain new key (only $10) and reprogrammed the computer. $250 total, and no vehicle for 6 weeks!!! Someone obviously needed a vehicle to drive around. But it was better than junking it. They told me to never use the remote again, and that was 2 years ago. I have not had the problem again, and it has about 200K miles at this point. Good luck!

If your front tires are turned when you turn the car off at will put pressure on the steering wheel when you go to start it triggering the theft light turn the wheel whichever way will take up the tension then start your vehicle
