Always start by reading codes. An auto parts store will read them for free.

If it is loudly knocking it need professional evaluation and reading codes will not be much help. It is a long shot, but did the serpentine belt come off and tangled in something?

Thanks a bunch. I found out that there was a history of code pertaining to the timing and also there is catastrophic damage under the engine. Luckily it's covered under the factory warranty still since it hasn't gotten to 70,000 miles yet or the expiration of the warranty.
