The idea of talking about a sound is always problematic. It is very difficult to completely and accurately describe a sound in the first place. Then the reader has to translate your description into something that fits their known experiences. In short, it is very unreliable to converse about noises. That said, just in general terms, the mechanical parts involved are the motor and the fan blade (or possibly squirrel cage) which the motor turns. The bearings on a motor can indeed be fairly loud and would increase in volume when you turn the switch higher. But also if there has been nearby damage and the fan is not mounted securely or some bracket has been bent....then the fan may be hitting something. That too could make noise that would become louder as you turn the switch higher. The motor bearings may only squeal but could also cavetate. That can get really loud but still sounds like a uniform whirring noise. If you are hearing a clanging noise, that is more likely to be the fan/blower cage hitting something. That said, really badly worn bearings on the motor could allow the fan to hit something and then you would bet BOTH sounds simultaneously. Your next step is to visually inspect the motor/blower unit. Sorry, I have not been into mine yet so do not have a ready description of how to access it.
