Gauges/dashboard going haywire? 14 Equinox

Asked by gdmichon May 15, 2023 at 07:01 PM about the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox LS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife's equinox has begun to do something interesting.
2 days ago, her Service Stabilitrak light came on, and shortly after, Service
Power Steering flashes across the gauge and her gauges began to fluctuate
rapidly, from where they currently were down to 0 and back. (RPMs, MPH,
digital speedometer, engine temp)
The battery tested good, as well as the alternator.
I did clean some corrosion off of the terminals, and the grounds that I could
get to. The car operated fine for about 3hrs of drive time (45mins to work, 45
mins back, 20mins to the store, 20 mins back, and about 40mins drive
today.) When she approached a light, those same lights kicked on, and the
gauges began to go haywire again.

What else can we check? Note that I was not able to get to ALL of the
ground wires as they seem to be buried beneath a bunch of hoses, or maybe
I'm not following the correct path.

I would also like to note it is just the gauges going crazy, not her actual speed and RPMs, however it does accelerate slowly to start when the issues begin.

This sounds oddly like a problem I had with my wife’s Equinox, found out it was a BCM having issues. Of course you can’t get one. So I took a chance and went to the (choke) dealer and made them re-flash the unit even though they swore up and down it wouldn’t fix the problem, guess what it did fix it. So this time it was a hundred bucks well spent as it hasn’t had any issues for two years now. Note: if the vehicle has ever experienced any kind of voltage problems or tried to jump another vehicle that could have been the cause.

Welcome to the world of GM and never ending electrical problems! My advice, get rid of it. Jim

Sorry, I can not understand Gene's answer about a year ago: So I took a chance and went to the (choke) dealer and made them re-flash the unit even though they swore up and down it wouldn’t fix the problem, guess what it did fix it. So this time it was a hundred bucks well spent as it hasn’t had any issues for two years now. Is there anybody nice to tell me what happened, how the dealership fixed it, in simple English, so that I can understand? Thanks!

The (choke) was the cost of the dealership. re-flashing is when the dealer hooks up the dealer specialty scan tool that links directly to the mainframe at GM, then the dealer can type in the VIN of the vehicle and reprogram the unit to match that VIN, so all of the calibrations are correct for that vehicle. Is that better?
