ID's, financial through Car Gurus

I have started a sale on Car Gurus, but neither buyer nor seller (me) were able to get their banking details verified, thus pushing us to a cash sale.  The buyer deposited $2000 via PayPal.  If something went awry, can I get his ID from CarGurus?  Why couldn't we get our banking details verified?  I was using my credit union, not a national bank
