2013 malibu radio turns on and off by itself.

Asked by Scott Jan 27, 2015 at 10:30 AM about the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco 2SA FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2013 Malibu eco and the radio/nav display keeps turning on and off and when it
is on not all the icons are loaded at all times. The display also turns on intermittently
when car is off with keys out of the ignition. I have not seen this problem with this car
anywhere yet. Can anyone tell me anything?

I have the same problem on my 2015 Malibu that I have driven for less than ten days. Did you ever end up taking yours to a dealership?

yes, I did take it back. They told me the radio internally shorted out, and they replaced it under warranty. Was fine after that, but I have since traded for a new canyon. I know this doesn't answer anything. I never got an answer from anybody it was like pulling teeth to get an answer from the dealership other than "your radio is bad, and needs replaced for $1100.00". Hopefully this at least lets you know its under warranty.

Granted my 2012 Chevy Malibu is5 now, but I've been having the exact same problem. And I'm out of warranty, so $1100 for a new stereo and 200& change labor. And apparently this is a super common issue, but they won't do a recall... So it's either deal without a stereo and dash lights and no rear camera, or pay the money to get it fixed. Doesn't seem right, considering how extremely common it is. Had I known then, I may have likely chosen differently.

I am having the same issue with my 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The dealership said they would need to call in their electronics guys to assess it for $120 then go from there. If it is defective it would cost approximately $1500. This is nonsense...

We are having the same problem on our 2013 Malibu and it's been running our battery down even though it checks out OK. We called the service department and they said we could take out the fuse for the radio to see if that is the problem.

I was able to purchase replacement radio at Julie’s Radio Ranch for $350+ 30 install. Then I went to auto repair shop ( not dealer ) and he programmed the radio for $90.00. Works great for $470.00. Julie’s is in Fargo ND so may not be close to you but I would call someone in radio repair near you. She has done many and new the best fix. Her # is 701-280-1960.

Just had my 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco (out of warranty) diagnosed with the same problem, radio is shorted out, needs new radio......Diagnose cost $140, new radio would be $1000 but yahoo I was given a $5 off coupon for repair....if this is a common it sure doesn't seem right that manufacturer is not addressing the issue....

I recently purchased a Malibu 2013 Used, and I am having probs similar to some you are describing. I always go to YouTube when I need to fix anything. I did exactly that, and I found several videos describing these probs. Start here >https://www.youtube.com/results? search_query=radio+repair+malibu+2013

I've have my 2013 Malibu, hybrid, for about 6 years, coming up on 7. I've had few issues with it so I can't say it's a POS or lemon, but I have had to replace the battery twice and the radio once before (the problem started up again and will need to be replaced, so it makes it 2X's). I would steer clear of the Malibu if you have been considering, these problems hit the pocket pretty good.

I had an intermittent power issue with my 2013 chevy malibu eco. 118k. I ended up buying a aftermarket radio and installing it myself. Cluthfield.com was a great help, I called them up and couldn't believe the customer service. Totally replacement was 600 dollars and they have life time tech support.

I have same issue with 2016 malibu and my service engine light came on same time. I told it to dealer they reset light and radio didnt turn off on them but soon as I left the radio did it and the light came back on. Did those that got car fixed did your service engine light come on? And after replacing radio did it fix the issue
