Front Right - Suspicious Noise between 40mph-60mph

Asked by Chipper38 May 07, 2020 at 08:56 AM about the 2014 Subaru Impreza 2.0i Sport Limited Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

To be clear, I know nothing about cars but I am just sick of being jerked
around my dealerships.
About a month ago I hit a pothole with the front right tire of my car, after that
almost immediately i started getting a loud humming noise that seems
correspond with how far the car is going (between 40mph-60mph), think of it
as a propeller sound if it was attached to the wheel.
So I took it to the Subaru dealership, they told me it was a bad tire... except I
already had the tires replaced, they told me it was a bad bearing, replaced it,
still nothing. I had enough, so I took it to a garage, they spent 4 hours on the
car with a stethoscope and they could make the car create the noise right at
40mph on the lift, still they cannot tell me what is wrong but insist it is safe to
drive. Any thoughts on what this could be?

I'm going to double down on it being a bad tire. You may have broken one of the steel belts in the tire. Seems fine most of the time, but when you hit that certain speed, there's the noise/vibration. A tire with a bad belt often make that noise right around 50MPH, give or take a few MPH. Try swapping tires around and see if problem shifts.

That was another thing that the dealership suggested, so the dealer got another tire as the ones on the car were still under warranty, they replaced it and it still happened. Other people I have spoke to suggested checking to make sure that their is not a wheel weight or something missing, or make sure the rim is not bent / cracked as a result of the pothole. I greatly appreciate the response KenF.

I'm having a similar problem with my 2014 Impreza only the vibration starts at 60 - 65 MPH and its sporadic. I saw a really good YouTube Video of a private mechanic diagnosing the same problem. The mechanic found that the right brake caliber was sticking - apparently at certain speeds. He replaced and the problem appears to be fixed. It's good to know something before going to the mechanic.
