Mini rear brakes

Took mini to dealer as mini connected said brake fluid was over due even thou cars was only service last month. The car is 2014 has only done 10K,  dealer today recommended replacement of the rear brake pads, he said pads were 80% gone 4mm left and should be replaced at 3mm, so I said yes. Thinking about it now the car has only done 10k, can this be true that the car needs new rear pads at 10K or is something a miss here ?

It doesn't sound right, rear pads last a lot longer since the front ones are the ones doing most of the work

These cars are notorious for brakes wearing quickly but 30 to 50k miles. Driving styles will greatly affect how many miles you get out of your brakes, regardless of who makes them but 10k miles is very low.

Asking to see the worn parts is useless as there are always old brake pads available and you wouldn't know if they were your old ones or not unless you marked them prior to having the work done. When your mini needs new pads a warning light will come on. If there is no light on I would remove a wheel and actually look at the installed pads. You see how much material is left.

Thank you to all for your help. Went back the next day and as expected they did not even have the pads but said "the next set will last 30k it just the luck of the draw how long pads last". So congratulations BMW/ Mini you have made £180, well done. Oh I forgot to say this is the wife's car. BMW please enjoy the £180 as it really helped me in my decision process. I have placed an order for a 2017 E class delivery October.

factories make mistakes , a simple problem in the rear set could make one pad wear uneven , what you need is an honest mechanic .180 quid's like $240 bucks , not a lot to spend on a car but I like you vote with your $$ ,

I have a 2014 MINI Countryman....I bought the service contract that covers brakes through 100,000 miles. I'm now at 99,000 miles and they haven't replaced them yet. Said last month when I took it in that they still have between 2 and 3 mm left, so they CAN'T replace them under warranty. I argued...and lost. However, I'm done with MINI now.

If you go into a BMW / mini dealer and take some brake pads they would be the first to call the police. But this BMW main dealer was quick to try this on me. So If the dealer thinks BMW group won't act or don't care.In that he can do this, then this is a sign of much deeper problems right to the top. So if BMW allow this activity in the agents, why should I trust then on emission or critical safety ? I would not allow any agent or channel partner in my organization to do this. So why should I accept this from BMW ? On the other hand the Mercedes has been a totally different class of service, ( When my order was factory delayed the dealer in Oxford gave me a top of the range E class for 8 weeks free and let me take it abroad ) best decision ever. The 2014 mini had its first MOT and was up for change, I did considered part-ex for a new mini as the wife did love the car but I was shocked when two other BMW dealer's valued at 23% of the original value and its only done 12K miles with over £6K of accessories when new. So we gave the mini away to a good cause for free rather than be insulted, The mini sales rep still rings and emails every other week, but I think you can guess what we replaced it with :)

I have a 2103 Mini Cooper S that I bought second hand CPO from a dealer with about 12K miles on it. At about 14K miles I had the rear wheels off and did notice the rear brake pads were very low. When I brought in the Mini for servicing they recommended the rear pads be replaced which I agreed to after a little hemming and hawing because I did see the pads low on my own.

I had the brake warning light come on 500 miles ago. Just checked them visually and I’ve got at least 3-4mm left on them which with my driving style should last at least another 1500-2000 miles at least. The wear sensors seem to be a wonderful cash cow for unsuspecting drivers. I’ll change them when I’m ready not BMW.

I took my car to a mini dealership for it's first Service @12,000 miles (2 years old) - to get a call an hour after drop off "Your car is in excellent condition" well yes I look after it! "but your rear brake pads need replacing @ at further cost of £240 - would you like it to proceed" er ... no! £240 on top of £350 for the service - for a car in excellent condition ... mileage has not been done over the past 12 months due to Covid lockdown! Are they trying to pull a fast one on a woman driver - yes it is known to happen ... I will get these checked out by local garage ...

I bought a new 2006 Cooper S from my closest dealer, an hours drive, at the time it was a BMW / Mini dealership. Equipped as a 6 speed automatic, it had a habit banging a downshift when slowing down. They performed the Mini required and denied anything was wrong with the transmission. Then it went back for an upper hydraulic motor mount which they charged for , then brakes, all paid for. When the transmission got worse they still denied it needed repair. Eventually it became the source of many malfunctions and check engine lights and limp mode operations. At the time we didn’t know there was a class action against mini for the trans issue and were never notified by the dealer. The diagnosis was to get a replacement trans which cost more than the car was worth. Fluid was added thru the drain plug overflow tube. Nothing helped. A couple of tow trucks later and We eventually traded the car away, my wife was sad as she loved the car. It also had water leaking into the rear hatch and the exhaust hangers rotter away. It was an awesome car to drive but not to own. No more Minis for us. Except my old 73 Mini Clubman With JCW specs.

I think my rear brake pads wore out prematurely because of the parking/ emergency brake sticking. After getting the pads replaced, I did some research. There was some mention of faulty calipers, but I am not sure mine are faulty. I did lube the parking brake mechanism at the rear wheels though. I have not seen excessive wear since then, but it has only been another 12k miles.
