what caused my battery to blow up?

I tried to start our yesterday... i put the key in the
ignition.. no issues.. turned the key.. still no
issues... turned the key to start it... BOOM.. starter?  
I NEED HELP!!.. please

If the battery blew up it was probably dry due to being overcharged. The hydrogen in the battery cells ignited due to a spark.
