my 2003 GMC Sonoma 4X4, with 196k, Rearend noise!

Asked by FRRIchard Feb 10, 2016 at 01:28 PM about the 2003 GMC Sonoma SLS Ext Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

it seems to be making noise and I have been told to replace it.  Is it worth replacing?  The repair co could not locate the rearend, as a 4X4 one, and stated it may cost too much.  Where would be the best place to look to have it replaced?  NE VA area.  thanks

I think a rebuild is the way to go. Try a trans shop in your area. Even the 4X4's are not that complicated if you have the right tooling available.

I would call up a junk yard and see if they can track down a rear axle or just the differential. I have a hard time believing that they can't find one. You could also search on Craig's List.
