electrical issue after removing factory stereo

Asked by MrTommyboy68 Oct 28, 2021 at 08:06 PM about the 1988 GMC Jimmy 2 Dr STD 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I removed the factory stereo and now discovered when I turn on my
headlights, both turn indicators light up, the key in lock buzzer doesn't work
and the voltmeter drops to zero.  I checked to make sure I didn't
inadvertently ground something out.  I have "clock power" (constant on) radio
power when key is in "run or accessory" position.  Any suggestions or is this
GM's way of messing with us?

You may need an interface between the original harness and the after market stereo , of course it sounds like there is no stereo at all so that may affect the computer . Your experience may differ .

The turn signal indicators coming on with the headlights means you have a bad instrument cluster ground. Oftentimes GM used the radio mounting brackets as ground straps behind the dash. Make sure the metal radio brackets are installed correctly and are mounted in the proper positions. Hope that helps! Jim
